Assessment With Technology

In my assessment with technology I have created a couple different forms of assessment for the students in my biology class. The first assessment is a simple quiz. I have started out by having the students study the different parts of plant and animal cells. The students viewed videos and read various articles on the different parts of the cells. Students reviewed what the parts look like and what the functions of each part of the cells are. After I felt like the students could display a basic knowledge of the material I felt that a quiz was in order. I made a quiz available to students that asked a few questions over the parts of a cell. The quiz was multiple choices and was more basic. This particular assessment really just asked students to recall facts about plant and animal cells.

After the students completed this particular assignment they found another one. This assignment was the one that really gets into the meaningful learning category. As online assessment can involve a variety of methods. I opted to go with an open response question that involved students digging for information on their own. I feel that when students have to find answers to something on their own they will come closer to remember and recalling that information. I asked students to begin to research some information. Students were asked to note where the information they found came from. I also feel that this is a great form of assessment because it allows for students to be creative and have the freedom to explore new information.

It is apparent that when using this type of technology with an online class certain steps must be taken to ensure that students are getting involved in meaningful learning. I feel that with good planning and hard work teachers can achieve a higher level of thinking allowing students to develop. It is key to keep these factors in mind when setting up any form of online assessment. Students must be given higher level questions that allow them to develop and discover an opinion. In the future I feel that using these types of programs to teach classes will prevail and continue to gain authority. In the world of today many people are receiving different levels of education through online research and assessment projects. With the many advances in technology educators are starting to see the ways that new programs such as these are allowing to better educate students. The modern advances in technology are also allowing these classes to be more personal. Teachers use voice thread and many other applications to put a face with the name. They also allow students to ask direct questions and feel that they are getting a personal response. In conclusion, the more society begins to except online classes as a means of primary education the more these programs will be used. I feel that at some point in the future students may learn everything through online assessment. With the ability to evaluate data and share that information student’s progress could be tracked daily on a nation wide basis. Now that’s something to think about!
