Simulations

Simulations or virtual manipulative are one of my favorite subjects we covered during this class. I feel that simulations are one of the best tools teachers can use in order to help students better understand complex situations and tasks. The complex ideas are sometimes hard to understand for students without actually looking into how thing really work. The third world farmer simulation is one of the best I have played. In research I found many simulations that allowed students to see how things worked or better understand ideas. I am very impressed with how realistic third world farming truly is. This game gives students the opportunity to step into the shoes of a true third world farmer and allow them to live the life they live everyday. Students learn quickly in this game that things can be very difficult for the farmers in third world countries.

On of the great things about third world farmer is the information that it gives students. This game has many aspects that can be used to teach students. From the math of how the farmers figure up how much money the have made or lost in many cases. To the real life situations students can learn about real world problems. The ideas of simulations don’t just stop with this particular game.

As technology has developed over the years many new programs have come out to help students better understand how major issues or complex situations work. One of the greatest things about these simulations is it allows students to experience things that normally they would not be able to see or do. Students can all pack up on a field trip to go view a museum half way around the world. But with the advances in modern technology students can now take virtual tours of many different historical land marks all over the globe. The uses of simulations never stop impressing me.

Another wonderful part of simulations is allowing students to do lab experiments that could normally be dangerous or harmful. Also these lab experiments could also cost schools lots of money that they no longer have to spend due to simulations. There are multiple programs on the market for instance that allow students to dissect a frog all through the use of simulations.

It is very easy to see how simulations can be linked to meaningful learning. I feel that simulations are a key part of technology that will allow students to continue to grow and experience things that without technology would never be possible. Simulations will continue to develop to the point that students will have more opportunities then ever and will receive a better education in the end because of it.
